Joan C. Lenihan is a life-long New York resident. She grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and after attending Bishop Kearney High School went on to Brooklyn College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. While in college, Ms. Lenihan became interested in politics and spent many hours coordinating and participating in local, state and national campaigns.
Ms. Lenihan’s organizational and advocacy skills became evident during her tenure as a special education teacher at the New York City Department of Education. Not only did Ms. Lenihan fight to support the needs of her students, but she also championed the rights of her colleagues as a teacher’s union representative.
It was during this time that Ms. Lenihan made the decision to become a lawyer. She went to St. John’s University and graduated from the Evening Division in 1992. In November of 2009, Ms Lenihan retired from her teaching position and started a full-time law practice. The decision to represent the rights of individual plaintiffs in employment matters was a natural outgrowth of her involvement in political and union activities. Ms. Lenihan’s interest in estate planning developed as increasing numbers of her friends and colleagues asked her to assist them in preparing wills and estate plans.
Ms. Lenihan has continued to hone her legal skills through active participation in the following organizations:
